Theme Seven: Heaven

Tonight was the night of the annual Halloween ball held at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. All of the students had been looking forward to this night since before the school year even began. They had carefully selected the costumes they wanted to wear for the occasion. The only requirement for the ball was that everyone had to be masked. Some of the students wanted to go the extra mile and use glamor charms on themselves so they wouldn't be easily recognized.

That's exactly what he did that night. As he looked into the mirror in his room, Draco Malfoy charmed his usually blonde hair to be a dark, chocolate brown. He almost didn't recognize himself. He had chosen to wear a 'Phantom of the Opera' inspired costume.

After Voldemort was defeated by Harry Potter and his father was locked away in Azkaban, Draco and his mother finally got to enjoy life. One day, they had decided to journey into muggle London and a whole new world was opened up to Draco. Watching muggle theatrical productions was definitely his favorite past-time. He never knew that muggles were capable of blending music and storytelling like the way wizard playwrights did.

Draco's favorite muggle musical inspired his costume for tonight. His costume almost perfectly matched that on the Phantom. Instead of the Phantom's normal white mask, he had a black mask that covered the upper half of his face, leaving his mouth and chin exposed.

Draco felt that he could relate to the Phantom. He longed for a woman that was destined for a hero and would never be his. He was actually hoping to run into her tonight and maybe have one dance with her.

"Come on, mate. We're going to head down to the Great Hall," came the voice of his roommate, Blaise Zabini, from the door. Blaise had chosen to be the Devil. But instead of the red body suit with the tail and horns, he had on a black suit with a red tie and a red mask that had horns on it.

"Think anyone will recognize me?" Draco asked him.

"No way in Hell. Especially with your hair like that," replied Blaise.

"Alright, let's go then," said Draco.

The two made their way towards the Great Hall. While they waited to be let in, Blaise met up with his date for the evening, Daphne Greengrass. Daphne was dressed as a Grecian goddess in a light purple flowing gown, and her mask matched her gown. Blaise gave her a kiss on the cheek when she approached them.

"Who's your friend, Blaise?" asked Daphne, giving Draco a once over.

Blaise leaned closer to Daphne and whispered, "It's Draco. But don't let anyone else know. He wants to keep it low key tonight."

Daphne nodded her head and linked her arm with Blaise's.

Draco, on the other hand, was busy looking for her. The one his heart longed for but would never be able to obtain. It didn't take long for him to find her. He could always tell her apart from anyone in a crowd, specifically because of her two body guards that stood on either side of her. One was the Boy Who Lived who was currently dressed up as a pirate. His unruly hair was a dead give-away that he was Harry Potter. The other body guard, who was also her current boyfriend, was dressed up as a Roman Caesar. As with Harry, Ron's hair was a complete give-away, too.

And there she was. Right between the two of them. Her costume of choice for that night was an angel. She looked absolutely breathtaking in her white, off the shoulder dress. It showed off just the right amount of her cleavage, and the skirt was long and puffy but not too puffy. She had sparkling wings that were attached to the back of her dress. Her chocolate curls were pulled up in a half-up, half-down style while sparkling jeweled stars were placed in her hair. She wore simple diamond earrings that didn't take away from her dress. Her mask was as white as her dress with tiny crystals decorating the sides. If Draco had any say in the matter, he would have said that she definitely could have passed as Christine Daae. Hermione Granger looked even more beautiful tonight than she did at the Yule Ball during their fourth year.

"Draco, close your mouth," muttered Blaise so no one would overhear him mention Draco's name.

Draco snapped his jaw shut, but he didn't take his eyes off of her. He saw Weaselbee put his arm around her waist and noticed that she slightly tensed up. There was a slight frown on her face. 'So, there's trouble in paradise,' thought Draco. This could end up being the perfect opportunity for him if he played his cards right.

Headmistress McGonagall opened the doors to the Great Hall and announced that it was time for the Halloween Ball to start. The students filed into the Great Hall and lined the walls waiting for the music to begin. Draco had yet to take his eyes off of Hermione.

As the music began, he saw the Weasel take her out to the dance floor to lead the opening number along with Potter and the youngest Weasley. He had nothing against Potter or his girl anymore, just Ron. There were a few other couples out there as well, and he figured that they were probably some of the Gryffindors that normally associated with Potter's group.

As the song continued, he saw the Weasel try to pull Hermione closer to him while she tried to keep a normal distance between the two of them. Draco was growing more and more jealous by the minute as other couples, including Blaise and Daphne, started to join in. He seriously considered cutting in just to hold on to Hermione as well as to see the look on Weasel's face when he did it. But the song ended before he could do anything.

Draco watched as Hermione and the Weasel made their way off the dance floor and over to the refreshment table. 'Typical Weasel. Only wanting food,' thought Draco. If he were Hermione's date, he would dance the night away with her and then take her.

As Draco continued to watch the pair, he noticed that Hermione was growing more and more agitated with the Weasel. He could tell that they were arguing with each other, and he was way on the other side of the Great Hall. Weasel said something and stormed out of the Great Hall leaving Hermione by herself.

This was his chance, and he was taking it.

Draco made his way to the refreshment table and was thankful to see Hermione still standing there. As he approached her, he could tell that she was upset. Hopefully, he could turn her evening around.

"Excuse me, but may I have this dance, Hermione?" Draco asked as he reached for her hand to place a kiss on her knuckles.

She looked at him with wide eyes through her mask. "Y-Yes," she replied.

Draco was jumping with glee inside his head, but on the outside he just gave her a small smile.

Hermione felt her breathe catch in her throat as he linked her arm around his. Who was this handsome stranger who wanted to dance with her? She let him lead her to the middle of the dance floor. He took her right hand in his left and put an arm around her waist. She was thankful that he kept a respectable distance between the two of them, unlike Ron had earlier.

In all honesty, she was tired of Ron's immaturity. He was constantly grating on her nerves day by day and it was continuously getting worse. The tension between them finally broke when he told her that he was done with her just before storming out of the Great Hall. 'He probably ran straight to Lavender,' thought Hermione.

She took her thoughts off of Ron as the handsome stranger twirled her around the dance floor. He seemed somewhat familiar to her, but she couldn't place him.

"Who are you?" she asked.

His grey eyes locked onto hers. 'I've seen these eyes before. But where?' she thought.

"You'll have to guess," he said with a smirk as he twirled her again. "I'll let you ask me seven questions. I'll only reveal who I am if you are able to guess who I am correctly."

Draco knew that Hermione would not back down from his challenge. She was too stubborn to do that.

"You're on," she said.

"Go ahead then," he replied. Another song started to pick up, and he pulled her slightly closer to him. He could see a faint blush on her cheeks.

"Are you in my year?" she asked.

"Yes," he replied.

"Well that narrows it down somewhat. What's your favorite subject?"

"Potions."

"Are you a Slytherin?" She waited for his answer. If he was a Slytherin, he could just be dancing with her as some prank.

"Yes," he replied. Draco saw a slight disappointment in her eyes. "Please, just listen. I'm not going to embarrass you or anything like that. I promise this isn't some prank. I've actually had a crush on you for a long time, but I've been too afraid and stubborn to act upon it until now."

Hermione looked back into his eyes. She didn't see any sign of him lying in them. "I believe you," Hermione told him with a small smile on her face. She was rewarded with a genuine smile from him.

"Thank you. So, next question?" he asked as he dipped her.

When he pulled her up, she asked, "Why did you choose your costume?"

"This past summer, my mother and I journeyed into muggle London for the first time. We enjoyed a few muggle theatrical productions. My favorite was 'Phantom of the Opera.' So, I choose to be the Phantom for tonight. As for your costume, let me guess? An angel?"

"Actually, I'm supposed to be Christine Daae. I came up with the idea because she was the Angel of Music to the Phantom as much as he was to her. That and I just really wanted to wear wings with my costume. But most of the people here have never heard of the musical, and they just think I'm supposed to be an angel because of the wings. Just so you know 'Phantom of the Opera' is my favorite musical, too," she replied with a smile.

God he was officially in love with her.

"Only three questions left," he said as he dipped her again.

Draco pulled her back up and proceeded to twirl her around again. He brought them a little bit closer when she finished twirling.

"Is it just you and your mother?" she asked, almost hesitating. 'That might have been to personal. I shouldn't have asked that,' she thought.

"Yes. My father is in Azkaban," he replied.

"I'm sorry."

"It's alright. We're actually better off without him."

'That must mean that his father was a Death Eater during the War,' thought Hermione.

"Exactly how long have you liked me?" she asked after a while.

"Since fourth year at the Yule Ball. You looked absolutely stunning. I didn't want to admit my feelings for you to myself. It went against everything that I believed in. But in time, I didn't care anymore. I knew that I wanted to admit my feelings to you, but I knew that you wouldn't believe me. You'd probably punch-" he stopped himself before he completely gave away who he was.

Hermione narrowed her eyes at him. 'Punch? The only person who I ever punched was…'

"Are you Draco Malfoy?"

'Well, she's not called The Brightest Witch of the Age for anything,' thought Draco, 'I knew she would figure it out.'

"Yes, I am. You're not scared are you, Hermione?" he asked.

Hermione couldn't believe that Draco Malfoy, the boy who had tormented her since their first year at Hogwarts, had feelings for her. And since when did he start calling her Hermione?

She looked up into his eyes and said, "No. I'm not scared. Just surprised."

Draco smiled at her and said, "Well at least you're not running away screaming."

"Did you actually think that I would do that?" she asked.

"Do you blame me? I've tormented you for years, Hermione. What I really want is to ask for your forgiveness," replied Draco.

She looked into his eyes, which were filled with worry. "I forgive you, Draco. Could you please take off your glamour charm," she whispered.

Draco did as she asked, and she watched as his hair changed back into its original blonde. He definitely looked much better with his blonde hair. As he watched her face, Draco saw no fear or hesitation in her eyes. He couldn't help himself when he swooped his head down and claimed her lips with his own. He felt her tense up for a second before slowly returning his kiss. In his entire life, Draco never imagined that something this wonderful would happen to him. As Hermione continued to kiss him back, Draco Malfoy finally knew what Heaven felt like.
Once I started writing this, I couldn't stop. I really didn't expect it to be this long. Hope you enjoy!
